How does an echosounder work?

The echosounder can determine a depth by calculating the elapsed time between transmission and echo reception. It emits ultrasounds that are reflected from the bottom or any suspended element (object, fish, seaweed, rocketc.). When a sound wave reaches an obstacle, it bounces back to the probe and turns into an electrical signal. The transducer converts electrical signals into sound waves and vice versa. It can therefore switch from receiver mode to transmitter mode at any time. Then, the echosounder can interpret the electrical pulse and transmit it as an image to the operator.
The operating frequency of the sounder represents the number of vibrations per second. It plays a primordial role since it allows to play between the precision and the range of the echo. The lower the frequency, the greater the range.
